Time for the annual stat questions.
My R5 stat seems a little poor, temp won't rise above 83 and it falls to around 73. Do you think this one is a better prospect?

Statistically speaking, the Renault 5 type in-hose thermostats perform better than the 'most' standard diesel ones. Of these alternatives the ones branded FirstLine, Wahler and Gates are the best performers. They are known to be watertight when shut, which is important for diesels. You should try to get one with a nominal setting as close to 90C as possible. There are 89C ones available if you search. The 86C one you link to wouldn't be my recommendation.

If you are pottering around town with the heater on in cold weather then these diesel engines will struggle to get up to temperature no matter what stat you fit.
Testing the stat is easy enough by suspending it in a saucepan of water along with a thermometer - or just drive the car like you stole it and check if it then comes up to temperature. If so there is nothing wrong with the stat. |
I / we use the gates stats at our meets, link below

Hey, thanks for the rapid responses, will get one opening at 89. Seems a few degrees are critical.

Been using a couple different types over the years on My Dizzle , currently on a DMGRS kit
89 degrees and the best the car gets to is about 83-84 . C, |
