.................. “The Flying Banana”, as of March 2019 she will be going into the paint shop at AM Restorations in Plymouth. I have said for a long time that I would love to get her resprayed. Having had 5 encounters, 4 with other vehicles and 1 wall, she needs some TLC. This car has saved my life and now it’s my time to say a Thank You.
Once back with me she will be garaged and only attend local shows. 202,500 miles and still an absolute joy to drive. And will still show a clean pair of heels to the unwary who may tailgate her. |

Funnily enough, I collected a beautifully restored Triumph Stag from A&M just last week. The car had been flattened & polished, was completely blemish free and I have to say the finish would not have been out of place on a brand new Bentley !
If that one was anything to go by, I think you'll be very pleased with the results Bob ;) |

Got a phone call......................
.................................. from A.M. Restorations confirming the date for Banana to go in for her paint on March the 4th.
Work to be carried out. Front and rear screens to be removed. This allows the paint and lacquer not to have a”edge” against the rubbers. All side trim to be removed and sprayed separately. Including door handles. Front and rear bumpers removed. The panels that go rusty on the edges of doors are to be replaced even with the carbon wrap on the still have gone rusty. I have 4 brand new ones to be fitted. Rear lip spoiler removed. Rear and front lights to be removed. Headlights to be polished along with the one rear light that has faded. Paint in the door jambs. There have been a couple of occasions where people have got out and caught the belt buckles in the door. They are not going to spray under the bonnet or in the boot area but theses areas will be thoroughly cleaned. Final job once painted she will get a machine polish. Expected to be off of the road for 6 weeks. Once home she will then get some extra work carried out by Rick Bhullar. Illuminated kick plates plus the LED lighting renewed. Plus under bonnet and boot LED lighting to be replaced. Once finished she will only come out and attend local shows. The plan is to sell the Bear, Redfive and my body to pay for it all. |

What colour are you going to get it sprayed then Bob? :getmecoat:
|
Sounds like a plan bob
|
She's going to look mint Bob, you must be very excited (I know I would be) :}.
One quick tip re the carbon wrapped door bits: before you put the new ones on, give the backs of them a good coating of Waxoyl or similar. They rust from the inside out, but once coated should last the life of the car. Cliff |

|
Bob, the front and rear screens don't need to be removed, only the surrounding trims, which leave ample room for the paint to be applied properly to the windscreen pillars.
I look forward to seeing how the job turns out, as I will be looking to have my Marina Convertible painted later on in the year, and for me a quality job is worth travelling for. I certainly won't be using the last person who painted a car for me, as I would like the car painted properly, and no skimping on preparation. When it comes to the paint refinishing, you are only as good as your last job, and I wasn't impressed sadly....... Brian :D |
Quote:
Good luck with the Marina’s re-paint. |
As Teflon has mentioned Bob, the rust starts from behind the door uprights, where the inner sections are spot welded on. Unfortunately, the black paint can't get into the joint, but moisture does, and hey presto....corrosion
Use a thin rust proofing fluid like Dinatrol & allow it to seep into the joints on the new finishers before letting A&M fit them ;) Marinabrian is completely correct, you only need to get the finishers removed to paint it properly. Removing & refitting the screens brings the risk that they might just leak after refitting. So if the car is currently dry & leak free, I'd ask them to only remove the trims but leave the screens in place. I'm sure they will understand this. Lastly, I can vouch for the quality of their finished jobs Brian, I collected a Stag from them a couple of months back and the paintwork was like glass, mirror finish and a truly stunning depth to the shine. I couldn't fault it. You get what you pay for... :D |
I will have to get some darker sunglasses for when I pass by Bob to protect my eyes :)

I look forward to seeing Banana in her new skin :drool4: Brian :D |

I've been using Peverell Garage for nearly 20 years interesting to see how it has changed, never knew it was a VW or a Lada dealer.
My Uncle had one of those Lada estates, 2nd from right, complete with a hand crank that he used when it wouldn't start. It didn't work and I can still remember as a boy helping push it up and down the street with my Dad trying to get it to go :} Currently the office is where the Mazda sign is and the workshop is down the ramp to the right. The rest of the site is also a different company, Hyde Park cars a BMW and Mini specialist. |
Quote:

The last time I visited Peverall Garage must have been in the early 90's, I went to look a used, red Alfasud. Couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years old
You could see filler in the top of the rear pillar lifting.....needless to say I've never owned an Alfa :duh: |
She has gone into.................
................................... A.M.Restorations this morning.
Emptied her out yesterday, all the fluffy Banana’s and everything else are put away in a box. The large Banana, Bertie, who normally rides shotgun with me is in the back bedroom. Sharing the chair with D.C the large fluffy dog. (I know it’s sad). Boot emptied of all the cleaning stuff, so much of it. Arrived at the garage at 08.00 and she was booked in. Deposit taken along with with some details. I got the number of a cab company from Andy, the boss at the garage. Phoned and in less than 5 minutes the cab was there. Nice ride back in a Toyota Avenis, and the rain started. Driver dropped me at my front door. Moved Leafy into Banana’s spot. Missing her already. |
Quote:
|
’I know it’s sad’. No it’s not. I have an owl sitting on the back seat. ‘Owly the owl’. We forgot about him sitting in the back when we went to Germany a couple of years ago. Going through the customs at the shuttle, passport check, the person checking said, quite straight faced, ‘where’s his’? Wondered what he meant for a bit, and then he nodded his head towards the back seat. Could not help but laugh. Shows how observant they are.
|
Just had a phone call from the paint shop, the work is continuing at a steady pace. They have said that whoever had repainted the front bumper had made a right hash of it. Now the front bumper has been resprayed 3 times, once by a Monogram paint specialist in Reading and twice by a Bentley and Porsche body shop in Essex.
A.M Restorations have advised that the work may take a bit longer than planned as there is now extra work to be carried out on the bumper. The plus side there will be no difference in the final bill. Missing ole Yella, and now the Bear has been towed in just leaving me Redfive or the bus to get about. |
Whilst it may take a little longer, at least you know it'll be done properly. Banana is going to look better than ever once the work is completed.

Getting painted this week.
I had agreed to pay for the work as we went along, that way the final amount would not be such a hefty shock for me at the end.
So today I have received the bill for the next instalment. She is now ready to go into the paint shop. The work carried out so far is; Work carried out to MG ZT 05/03/2019 To 29/03/2019 Carry out stripdown of vehicle including: Bumpers, mirror covers, near side and off side mouldings, rear spoiler badges, door handles, roof mouldings, door cappings, lights from front bumper and grilles. Remove 4 arch liners and seized wheel nuts - rusted in screws. Mark out dents, sand down and carry out filler repairs to required areas. Carry out filler work to bootlid and sand down bonnet. Apply Fertan rust treatment to bonnet, bootlid and rear of roof area. Complete filler repairs and sand down repaired areas. Prep complete body for primer. Mask up complete vehicle for primer. TOTAL LABOUR 53.25 HOURS Remove front screen and rear screen mouldings, trims and clips. (Fixed cost) So tomorrow I’ll pop along to the garage and get my credit card out and pay this instalment. I have already put a deposit down. Will take a camera and have a look at the progress. |
Sounds much like what was done to OVP, and you know how good she looked as a result :drool4:. It'll be like getting a brand new car on collection day - very exciting. I'm expecting to notice an extra yellow glow in the sky the day she comes out of paint - can't wait to see her .
I appreciate the final bill won't be small, and will no doubt outstrip Bananas "market" value, but sometimes things are worth far more than their monetary value, and this is most definitely one. Well done on commissioning the work bob, it'll be worth every penny spent :}. Cliff |

I was at the garage this morning and she looked a wee bit unhappy. Sitting in the booth with no doors on. All trim including window surrounds were taken off. Wheel arch liners removed. Bonnet and boot in primer.
I never realised how many dents and imperfections their was. So the next stage will be full primer then after the flatting they will start on applying the base Yellow then after more flatting the top Yellow will be applied. Then eventually the lacquer. Before the final machine polish. |

I have been following this with interest, having found myself in a similar position. I recently bought my Rover 75 to take the strain off using my 41 yr old MGbgt. But now in a worse position. The Rover is so beautiful am scared to drive it, so mg continues as main vehicle. Worse still I now have to build a shelter to protect it which is costing a lot more than I paid for the car. Could I have Roveritis disease?

Bob, I have an observation here, the rear bumper needs to be removed from the car, and the parking sensors taken out of the bumper.
Failure to do this prior to painting will result in the new paint peeling around the sensors, and it will be impossible to clean and correctly key the lower trailing edge of the rear quarter where the bumper joint is, which will result in the same problem. It would be a shame at this stage to "spoil the ship for a ha'porth or tar", and to remove the bumper and sensors will require no more than an extra hour of labour. I would be tempted to call them before they start applying the base coat over the primer ;) Brian :D |
Banana update.
Following on from Brian's obversation re the removal of the rear bumper I have been to the garage and spoke to them about it. I was assured that everything was in hand and all would be taken care of.
I was there again this morning to pay for the 3rd instalment. Oh! My! The paint work is amazing, yet to have the rest of the bodywork done. They are resuming on Banana again next week. The front bumper has taken up more time than they thought owing to the bad workmanship, there words, that had been done by the previous paint shop. The bumper has now been sorted out and is now covered in primer. All the smaller body parts have been painted with the primer. Windscreen is back in along with the rear window. New retaining clips have been fitted. New moulding clips have been bought and are waiting to be fitted. Everything smallish has been bagged up and labelled. On this visit I took the Bear as I had to pop back to the tyre shop to have the torque on the bolts checked, had 4 new tyres fitted yesterday. My previous visit to the A M Restorations had been in Redfive. And the Bear had loads of admirers this morning, even the staff from the garage next door came to have a look. Their boss has a very nice Red Ford Mustang, about 5 years old. Even he was impressed with the Bear. I was asked if I would sell the Bear, I said yes but will not hold my breath waiting on a reply. Been let down so many times waiting on replies. So Banana will will home in about 2 weeks, might be sooner. But I'm in no hurry, perfection always takes time. Thanks for the kind remarks. |
It’s the longest we’ve been apart........................

Painted with the rear bumper fitted, and with the parking sensors in place :duh:
What a shame it's amazing that a job that was looking so promising will be spoilt for the sake of a little effort. The lower edge of the rear quarter panel will peel, as will the upper edge of the bumper, and around the parking sensors. Take a look at what cannot possibly be cleaned, never mind prepared for paint with the bumper fitted... https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/a...1&d=1556919339 https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/a...1&d=1556919533 I cannot understand why they've done this, give the care taken over the rest of the car  Did you not speak to them about this Bob? Brian :D |
Quote:
|
the risk of peeling is there Brian as its hard to key right up to the edge of each panel without removing the bumper but definitely a no go with leaving the parking sensors in as the paint will fuse between the sensor and bumper.
nit picking maybe but the finish in the pics look very good. looking good Bob :} |
Quote:
I would be tempted to ask them about it........how do they expect the new paint to adhere to fifteen years worth of accumulated polish and other crud? The answer to that rhetorical question is it won't. It is my experience that a painter, if he doesn't understand how a component is removed from a car is to simply carry out a P.O.S.H. paint job, after all it will look ok for a couple of months or so. I had to remove these very bits for the person who painted my car, as he didn't have a clue how the sensors fitted into the bumper, but at least the bumper was removed to be painted on a trestle in the way your front bumper has been done, and he had the sense to call me to ask the question. It's sad, but it really needs to be addressed properly Bob, because if left until remedial rectification becomes apparent, it will be quite difficult to match the paint on the rear quarter panel and bumper, and you will end up with an paint mismatch like you had with your front bumper. You may have faith in their workmanship, I certainly don't because it has not been prepared correctly. I'm not being critical of you, you are not a painter and you are only going by what they have told you, but make no mistake the nice finish won't last very long unless it's sorted out. Brian :D |

I have taken on board your comments and observations. And I will speak to the garage about it. I can do no more than that, after all as it has been pointed out “I’m no painter” and don’t understand these things.
Any work that’s needs to be carried out on any of my cars I leave to those who know what they are doing, hopefully. So far I seemed to have done all right. Been caught out a few times but I have learned by my mistakes by not going back. I have had a few running battles with garages over the years. Even gone to court once or twice. I have asked, and got excellent replies, on here on what’s needs to be done about repairs to my cars. And all 3 are still running ok, even my kit car V8. As I have clearly stated in the past I owe this car my life, without Banana I would not be writing this. I would just be a memory in someone’s life. |
Hi Bob,
Too much time & effort has been lavished on Banana to let an oversight like this to blight on otherwise beautiful finish. Hopefully the garage will have a satisfactory explanation/resolution. I hope you get the finish that both you & Banana deserve. Rob |
This is an interesting one, as post no.11 details the work to be done, and mentions 'front and rear bumpers to be removed'.
Are we sure that the hidden areas being discussed here have not already been sprayed, just like the door shuts, leaving the outermost 'skin' of the car to be sprayed evenly in one go once the doors are back on ?? Having seen the quality of finish from A&M, I'd be fairly certain they know what they're doing, so I'd be surprised if they'd make a mistake, as is being suggested here. |
Hi Bob.
Wishing you get the very best outcome with the project. I know it is not very nice at all when you pay a lot of money for something and really excited and looking forward to it, and then someone takes the shine off your dream. They mean well and are very possibly correct. They are just looking after your interests but it is still painful. I really hope you get your reassurance that you seek and the outcome that you seek. You deserve it. |
The end is in sight..................
................................................ and Banana should be home by the weekend.
Last Friday I received a phone call from the tracking company, Banana has a tracker fitted, they informed me that the battery had been disconnected, I though that was a bit strange seeing how long they have had the car. So I popped along to see why and, apparently the battery had gone flat. Thus them putting a jump back on had sent a signal to the tracking company. I was there, yet again, this morning. All the major panels are back on. They want to flat it again before it’s final polish and then the trim can go back on. They have polished the headlights up a treat but have had a problem getting the milky finish out of the n/s/rear MG7 light assembly. Seems it’s a common fault. I have been told that it was caused by the rear light assemblies being produced in two different factories back in China. Redfive has the same problem. So I might convert back to the original lights. They have replaced bolts/screws where needed, and cleaned the rest up. New clips on the arch liners. All new clips for the trim have been bought. The wipers are still off along with the screen washers. She certainly looks good sitting there in the spray booth, the artificial lights don’t do it justice. Now the issue regarding the rear bumper removal. I have been assured that it has been removed, and this morning I noticed that the reversing sensors have not been painted. I pointed this out and I was told they would be done before the car was finished, and handed back to me. |
Brill! Glad you are happy.

Still waiting for Banana...........................
........................................ to come home. I was supposed to be collecting her last Friday but the garage have delayed the release as they had encountered a problem, no idea why. No explanation given. Hoping to hear some news today.
Need her home now. |
Must be frustrating Bob, but at least they seem to be doing a thorough job, and not just rushing her out the door. She'll no doubt be home soon and I'm sure the wait will be worthwhile.

With a job as big as this, there'll always be something last-minute to slow matters down. But just like the original 75 launch back in '99, it's much better to delay so that everything is correct, than to rush it and spoil things ;)
|
Been on the...........
.................................. phone to them this morning. Banana is in the final stages of her mega polish. She should be ready for collection on Wednesday. Apparently the delay was caused by one of the team being taken ill at work. They have recovered and now back at work, so that’s good news.
|
Been following this thread from the start and really looking forward to seeing the pics and also Bob's thoughts on the job they will have done. I suppose it's like anything, the longer you can reflect on it, the more nit picking you do.
Would Bob be willing to give us a ball park figure on the cost involved in getting his car finished to this high standard? I'm sure there are others like me watching this with interest and thinking "I wonder if I could afford to do the same?". |
Extremely expensive is the re-spray. i’m not prepared to reveal the cost on the open forum. But to give you an idea, 5 years ago I was quoted £7,000 by a local spray shop in Essex. Prior to my move to Cornwall a spray shop in Kent quoted me £5,000 and another spray shop in Lincolnshire quoted me £3,000. But these were spray shop quotes not restoration shop quotes.
Banana has been in the workshop since March 4th. Once I get the final bill I’ll pm you, or anyone else that wants to know, with the final cost. |

A few faults..................
......................................... with the work. So garage are taking Banana back this afternoon. Boot spoiler has come adrift at one end, you can see the seal has come away. Trim on one side is loose on one rear wing, looks like the clip has broke. They did hint that they may keep her overnight.

Banana being kept in...................
................................................ overnight. The spoiler fitting on one side has come adrift from the spoiler itself. They are going to bond a stud on. The trim issue is as I thought the clip has broken. They will carefully remove the trim and put new clips back on.
The garage has given me two disc’s recording all the work carried out and another detailed invoice. Total time they worked on the car was 236 hours. Hoping to collect her tomorrow afternoon. |
It'll be well worth it when it's finished, it does look fantastic even before the snagging issues :D

Allen very kindly gave me a lift to collect Banana. Trim clips was not broken, just had not sat in place properly. Rear spoiler now sits better in well secured in place.
