We’ve had three phone calls - obviously from another part of the world entirely- saying they are from BT or Openreach and that they are contacting me to sort out a problem with my router.

Initially I just told them to bu99er off but today I wound them up by making out I was doing as they asked. They were not happy!!

Interesting that they are coming through on various U.K. numbers - one of them was 01725 area code that is very local to us.

Any tech guys on here able to shed light on how they are doing this?

I thought that your original heading

was referring to Road Tax.

With a small amount of tech, you can 'spoof' a number to make it look like it's coming from somewhere else..... or they have a VOIP (Voice over IP) setup for each area code they want to have a go at.

It's the same with emails, a little bit of work by a tech-savvy bod, and you can make it look like the email is coming from someone else.
