MOT results and Brake Pipe advice.
 

How'do Folks :}

My Car has been registered on a SORN for the last month or so - with an Expired MOT.

I'm booked in for a visit to Duncan (CossieDunc) tomorrow to have both front Control Arms/Bushes replaced :cool:

I didn't want to take a chance driving on an Expired MOT so i booked a Test for this morning - expecting a Fail, but i'd have a Valid (Fail) Certificate to drive the Car for repairs ;)


the Car did Fail i'm glad to say - otherwise i'd question the Testers competence :D

I use the same Test Centre each year - their Test Ramp has some Apparatus that shakes the Car rather Vigorously :eek: .........not sure if this is Standard Equipment for Test Centres these days ?



Results -

Repair Immediately
Emissions - Not really a problem (100%) sure it's a Catalytic Converter issue (i'll replace this)
Parking Brake Efficiency - Just needs an Adjustment.
Suspension Arm Ball Joint Excessively Worn Offside Front Lower - I have replacement parts due to be fitted tomorrow.

Brake Pipe Excessively Corroded Nearside/Offside Rear (Front to Rear) - I need to figure this part out.

from what the Tester said it's the Pipes that Run the Length of the Underside that require replacing - am i correct that these sections have Connectors front and rear ? and these Connectors would need replacing ? (cut-off with New Connections Flared onto the remaining Pipe Ends ?)

Copper or Cunifer ?

Can I do this myself ? .....hmm

I'll have a wee search on the subject, and any advice would be appreciated :}
I like to at least know what NEEDS done - even if i don't do the work myself :}

I'll ask Duncan's advice tomorrow too.


I did have a couple other advisories -
Steering Rack Inner Joint Offside (Play)
Fuel Tank Straps Corroded
Brake Pipe N/S Rear O/S Rear and N/S Front (@flexi) Corroded, Covered in Grease or other Material

Could be worse - I'll sort out the who, where, what r.e the Brake Pipes and hopefully get back within the 10 days for a quick re-test and a Pass Certificate :cool:

There are a number of different MOT Test lanes used currently, some are two man test lanes where all the component testing is performed manually.
ATL is a one man test lane as is an OPTL and will incorporate "Shaker Plates"
These are usually pneumatic operated plates controlled by the tester to check movements in suspension joints rubbers as well as steering, these are quite powerful items and are operated to generate a level of twist in the car allowing both front and rear suspension/steering checks under a pre-determined level. It is funny seeing a car twitching the way they do on the ramp !:eek:

:cool: Replacement Catalytic Converter ordered tonight - should arrive for Monday :}


Had a wee look at the Car - r.e the Section of Brake Pipe to be replaced - doesn't look like it will be much of a challenge - easy to access and straightforward enough :shrug:


see if I can get these wee bits done then once i have an MOT Pass i'll sort the Advisories ............... it's a plan at least :D



I'm looking forward to my Car back on the Road - I've been driving a Vauxhall and it's not at all comfortable :getmecoat:

After a wee visit to Duncan this morning - my Car is rocking some Nice New Moog Control Arms with Meyle Rear Bushes :}


Duncan also had a look at the Brake Pipes - and we will confirm a day for next week to have all the Brake Pipes replaced :cool:

Just a word of warning, if car has no valid MoT and fails a test it cannot be driven away from test centre according to how I read this on Gov. Website :- https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/after-the-test
Driving a vehicle that’s failed

You can take your vehicle away if:

• your current MOT certificate is still valid
• no ‘dangerous’ problems were listed in the MOT

Otherwise, you’ll need to get it repaired before you can drive

That's why I try to get mine tested in the month before MoT is due

:} Interesting - I took my Car for the MOT (i knew would Fail) based on info suggesting a Vehicle can be driven to a pre-booked Garage appointment for Repairs following an MOT Fail (with no Dangerous Defects) and provided it meets the Minimum Roadworthiness Standards)

My Car was Safe to Drive and i thought doing this would keep me on the correct side of the Law :o ooops :D All Above Board now tho


Taxed today and I had a Nice wee drive in the Sunshine :cool: via Biggar on to Lanark for (the Best) Fish and Chips :drool4:
