Rover 75 petrol versions
My father wants to replace his diesel 75, not best of breed, with 1.8 or 1.8 turbo.
Now we are familiar with the diesel 75 and my father owns an MGF, so we know about the K-series engine. Is there anything specific to the petrol cars we have to look out for? How easy is it to change the head gasket on a 75? I am assuming it will be much easier than an MGF but that could just be an assumption. Is the 1.8 powerfully for a heavy car like a 75 or is it better looking for a turbo version? What MPG will the 1.8 and 1.8 turbo give? |
Can I ask what is it about the diesel that you don’t like?

If he just wants more power and torque, maybe he should consider the software upgrade to something nearer 160hp. More acceleration than the 1.8, more mpg - what's not to like?
I am well pleased with my diesel's performance speed-wise, I do not find it slow at all. A relatively cheap, sensible upgrade... |
i own a 2.0 cdt diesel its a great reliable car wouldn't think about changing it its even better with the 160 re map that its had . as the last post if its more power and torque i suggest you contact one of the lads on here that do t4 upgrades . your nearest man is bigg russ up liversedge does a mean re map also makes a good cup of tea or marina brian up north east and any of the t4 specialist on here do a postal service and quick turnaround and the remap will be considerably less expensive than looking for a petrol car rgds mark

The 1.8 non turbo is very easy to work on but it is a tad slow , for me a diesel with a re-map is a great performer :}

The 1.8 is fine for urban work but the turbo is needed for motorway and country driving. I have a 1.8T auto and it's a great performer, if not very economical.

My 1.8t is on 208,700 miles. Been re-mapped and has a ported head. Running at 210 bhp and will return 41.mpg on a good run. It’s had it’s problems, well documented on here. Had the Banana almost 10 years now. Had a diesel, same car twice. Got a V8 400 MG ZTT as well, but give me a 1.8t any day.
But at the end of the day the choice is yours, or even your Dad’s. |
