That won't bring on the check engine light though. Unlike the cam sensors, the crankshaft sensors are pretty much bullet proof - most problems are with them not being seated correctly after removal....

Really depends on how it has been driven - the pumps don't wear out with mileage but time run, so if a car is used only around town then the pump could be just as worn after 40k miles as another one...

Worth checking the cable clamp isn't restricting the movement. If the cables check out then maybe a fault with the internal selector mechanism. Rare but not unheard of with these Getrag gearboxes.

Worth investigating before buying a new crank pulley. Failed water pumps can make a very similar clatter, and something is slowing the PAS pump and alternator, and that won't be the driving pulley....

More than likely. Whilst the camshaft sensors do fail over time the crankshaft senors are pretty much bullet proof but get misdiagnosed. :}
