By way of an update and feedback for those looking for similar info. I have a nice new 12 month MOT ticket on my lovely car now. The Xenon level adjuster was indeed a BMW part so I was able to order one off a breaker from ebay for £14 posted. Only issue was the clip that connects the arm of the sensor to the cars suspension - see Ron's first pic. Mine had rusted off the bottom bit so I drilled a hole and cable tied it - still a pass even if it is a bit of a lash up but the clip was not available.
Two new springs from Rimmers who were conveniently doing a November discount and labour for taking the tank out to replace two corroded brake lines and done.
Need to get the hand brake sorted otherwise she's good for another year !
No dash warning lights (my previous VW lit up like a Christmas tree as did the Alfa !!)
