Have a look at an early Vauxhall Corsa, small hatchback.
Now look at the modern one, it's a large hatchback!

All valid points, however the trend is to electric and if I have judged the norm in that area then my guess is that supermarket car parks (subject in question) will be frequented by smaller cars doing more local trips so good luck with your unspoken hopes for larger parking slots....even if nothing changed with future vehicles the pile it high/sell it low brigade are unlikely to reduce parking density, it's just not in their DNA
