The gauge reading and red light indicate the overheat is real. A loss of sensor signal gives everything you describe except for the gauge response, which points south. Such a rapid overheat (2 minutes from cold) indicates something other than a cooling fan issue. I think you'll get the logical high readings from the diagostic routine. Whether a KV6 with a failed thermostat will overheat in just two minutes I don't know. Maybe water pump impellors actually do drop off?
