On One of our 1.8's we actually fit the belt a tooth out and once the engine is rotated by hand a couple of revolutions it aligns correctly Put the belt on with timing marks aligned it ends up a tooth out after a couple of revolutions
One of the reasons you should always rotate the engine by hand to check alignments
Not a hard job to check on a 1.8
