Upon removing the bearing to clean all the grease and debris off I found a sizeable piece of rush from the backplate exactly where Artic had suggested.
Once everything was cleaned down and put back together the problem is solved!

Nice to hear you did the investigation of the NS also, as i said in the post above 9/10 it's the OS seems you found the 10
As you also point out there is no need to cover the bearing or the back plate in grease as it attracts debris, always best to keep it clean a treat the back plate and paint it to help stop any further rust.
