A lot of these garages automatically change a DMF even if the old DMF is well within spec. I am currently waiting for them to do my daughters A5 clutch and they automatically quoted for a DMF.. But have said if it is within spec they will not change it... If they do, Like you I have told them to keep the old one for me to inspect.
PS, My DMF on my 75 is still the original one with 223k miles on it
And still well with in spec when the clutch was changed.
