Here is the fluid level checking procedure published by MG Rover in Technical Bulletin TB0080 issue 1 and summarised by me.
  1. Remove filler plug and add exactly 1 litre of fluid. Refit filler plug.
  2. Start engine and move gear selector through all positions, pausing for 2 - 3 seconds in each position.
  3. Allow the engine to idle until fluid temperature reaches 35˚C. This can be determined using a multimeter between two pins of the gearbox connector.
  4. With the engine still running remove the fluid level plug and allow excess fluid to drain completely, meaning wait until the drips stop OR the temperasture reaches 40˚C.
  5. If no fluid drains when level plug is removed, add fluid in 1 litre quantities until it does drain.
  6. Refit level plug and tighten to 15 Nm. Stop engine.
