Here is the fluid level checking procedure published by MG Rover in Technical Bulletin TB0080 issue 1 and summarised by me.
- Remove filler plug and add exactly 1 litre of fluid. Refit filler plug.
- Start engine and move gear selector through all positions, pausing for 2 - 3 seconds in each position.
- Allow the engine to idle until fluid temperature reaches 35˚C. This can be determined using a multimeter between two pins of the gearbox connector.
- With the engine still running remove the fluid level plug and allow excess fluid to drain completely, meaning wait until the drips stop OR the temperasture reaches 40˚C.
- If no fluid drains when level plug is removed, add fluid in 1 litre quantities until it does drain.
- Refit level plug and tighten to 15 Nm. Stop engine.
