Thanks for all the suggestions.
It is possible to pull away gently without a knock. I also noticed yesterday that it knocked a single time when I started the engine.
I've had a look at the front suspension lower arm rear bushes and they appear ok. Will try jacking the car up and rocking the wheel. Will also have a look at the top mounts.
