I'd use a silicone type adhesive/filler. The brass version finisher has a shallower dome, which means there's a large space between the door and the finisher centre. This is a good place for a large dollop of silicone. Whether sealing the outer edges is best is arguable IMO. It doesn't look so nice as a straight fit (IMO). I also think the idea of keeping out water is arguable, but it's a personal choice. Using silicone rather than something like 'No Nails' means you have a better chance of clearing up the area without damage if you want to remove them later.
