Son in Law is a Bricklayer
He says he would use PVA or Unibond coated to the top of the bricks before laying the final course of bricks or copeing stones, available from builders merchants.
He would also add a little to the final course cement & sand mix.
Same principle used for cement haunching around chimneypots at top of chimneys----
