This one seems to be slightly longer I can't get far forwards enough to go in. Am I doing something wrong or shall I give up and wait for original to the car dry and put it back in ?

It should fit albeit a little thicker than the later model cars, look into the front footwell upwards make sure the carpet is not snagged on the two prongs sticking up.
