The MGR spec does not state whether the oil has to have synthetic content. All it has to do is achieve the minimum ACEA specifications in the handbook and be of the correct grade e.g. 10W40, 5W40, 5W30 depending on ambient temperature ranges where the car is used.

In the UK, 10W40, 5W40, 0W40 and 5W30 should all be fine.

A synthetic oil provides better lubrication than semi-synthetic than mineral. Whether this will make any material difference will be determined by how hard the engine is used.

Personally, I use 5W40 synthetic all the time. You also cannot go wrong with 10W40 semi-synthetic especially if the oil is changed at the recommended or shorter intervals.
