Local garage identified the cat breaking down, so one ordered for fitting.
Yesterday after a hospital appointment for a CT Scan, wife and I went for a long lovely ride in the new forest, car running beautifully, a real joy to drive, air (very cold) on most of the day. Just as i arrived home a smell of electrical burning and smoke from extreme front of car. I think the fan area. Garage having a look at it on Monday.
Went to the shop last night, i did not use the fan or air at all ran beautifully.
I really do not need this kind of luck at the moment, although i am pleased a possible new owner didn't have this bad luck.

Have you already had the cat replaced? If it was the cat it would rattle all the time not just on tickover. Genuien cats are worth a fair chunk of money, if the car is an early V6 then the cat would be worth upwards of £600!
I've heard of a few garages quote for replacement cats recently. Remove original cat, fit £150 replacement, sell original for £600+ and they profit quite a lot.
