New update:
I'm an idiot.

As I said earlier: I had replaced the o-ring and had only found a small piece of the old one. I didn't think any further on it, really, but with Cantray's remark of fishing the seal out with a screwdriver, I thought "what if the old ring is still somewhere in there..."

Anyway, the old, broken o-ring was still in there (it was in one piece, save the part I'd already taken out). After removing this old ring and reassembling, the car started!
