A bit of dismantling and having a good look is worth more than pages of speculation on the forum!
Regarding your air conditioning, the compressor engaging is a good sign. The system is probably low on refrigerant. You're right to look for a local, mobile self-employed specialist. Don't be lured by low prices to the
fast fit boys or to a general garage offering air conditioning services (I've had my wallet burnt on that score
).
