I’m a bit sceptical about your mechanic’s reasoning. Having experienced a leaking seal it was nothing like your picture, just petrol below the level of the screwed top, think about it - it would require pressure of an oil well to get the upper part soaking wet. But on another occasion when I fitted the orange clip and released the push in fitting there was quite a lot of pressure in the fuel system which drenched the upper part of the filter just as your picture, rags didn’t help much. So I reckon Mike Noc was right in his first statement and perhaps your mechanic didn’t want to admit the connection wasn’t correct.
