The Daily Telegraph's Honest John has said in the past that this particular problem is most likely to occur first thing in the morning after a very cold night, because the springs are at their most brittle then. It's not a hard-and-fast rule, though, so I suppose those of us who have had springs break at home should think ourselves lucky that we were not out and about when it happened.
