The cam sensor on the diesel is only used for starting once the engine is running it's no longer needed.
It's only there to initially time the injectors, you can safely unplug it with the engine running and the engine will continue operating normally.

From the sound of it it's in some way fuel related, if there isn't sufficient fuel pressure the ECM will inhbit the injectors to prevent damage to the High pressure pump, that is why the car gets to a certain speed/revs then the power cuts until there's sufficient pressure.

Underbonnet pump, fuel filter, high pressure regulator and injector leakback are possible suspects.
If these are found to be ok then the ECM needs to be checked properly
