I have no experience with Diesel cars at all, but on the petrol models there is a water inlet and a water outlet (hoses in and out) to the cooler. You disconnect those from the cooling unit and join them together, so water continues circulating, but does not pass through the cooler.
That will quickly show you if there is a difference.
