Knowing the history, and with no mention of 'the family/estate, declining its return' it could be considered as stolen (as it is read). If this is the case, the seller could.be liable.to handling charges (as they are declaring the story).

Perhaps there is a time limitation on any possible.charge or investigation. I wonder if 50 years passing is significant?

Perhaps it is/was considered to be treasure, in the same.vein as metal.detectorist finds can be. It is valuable, unknown ownership, and albeit limited, but have historical consideration. So perhaps the coroner should be involved?

Ultimately, it does seem a bit crass, especially the 10% donation to raf causes.....
