pretty sure I have the right side. now I have the seal out and read the Haynes manual, I agree no instant gasket. There looks to be an oil way a few millimetres inside the casing, the seal should not cover this but the Haynes manual says out surface is waxed and should not be oiled

I have checked the drive shaft but it is had to tell if there is a problem.
It looks as if there is some pitting but this seems to be between the oil seal and the metal plate that is part of the drive shaft and not within the seal area, I cant see any issues with the casing where the seal sits.

I'm going to take 30 seconds then back to the garage to fit new seal
