On a flat road you can check by eye - the oil level doesn't have to be exact. A couple of ml either way will make no difference at all.
My drive is on a slope so I can jack the car up and with the wheels just off the ground it is level. I check this with a small spirit level at a few places as its not so easy to see the car is level on a slope.
