I believe it’s a roll pin that breaks and causes a problem, not saying this is what’s happening to yours but it does happen. As mentioned do not try and remove the gearbox on its own. One method I saw a friend use was from inside the car after removing the centre console was to drill the spot welds on the plate above the gearbox and this gave enough room to remove the lid and fix the linkage
