Single phase analogue meters used to have a cert date of 19 years. When changed they would be brought in to the workshop serviced and recertified for another 19 years. Occasionally customers would complain that their meter was faulty and we would carry out a standard load test (slt). This consistered of connecting a known load for a set period of time and the meter was read. Rarely, if ever was a meter found to faulty.
Meters were generally only dangerous if tampered with or installed incorrectly.
