I've noticed that if the low fuel level warning lamp illuminates when I start the engine from cold, after a short distance it extinguishes and the gauge needle actually rises a little. It's thought that this is because the gauge software takes account of the fuel consumption rate. This is calculated using the distance travelled which is derived from the wheel speed data from the ABS sensor.
