The earlier (black) expansion tanks have a moulded connector underneath. The original plan was to fit a float/reed switch sensor there. The design of the sensor would be similar to that fitted in the screen wash reservoir. However, the obvious experiment has been done and no, it can't be done. If a sensor with a similar output to the washer bottle could be installed, the low wash warning light would be the logical way to display a low coolant. It's my understanding that the HiLine low coolant icon is only pesent in IPKs fitted to diesels.That's why I was surprised that the OP had located one on his 1.8 IPK.
