I agree from my (limited) experience and Internet research. Having been advised my poor fuel consumption might be due to an out of spec MAF
I tried a genuine Bosch MAF designed for a VW diesel, which is very close in performance to the one designed for the M47 engine. It cost about £70. It lasted about 18 months, 15,000 miles. I've put the original MAF back in, because that wasn't the problem. So that's been good for 90,000 miles in just under 6 years. (I have the complete maintenance history of the car).
I take it you know if you go the Pierburg route you will also need to buy a MAFAM compensator? If you haven't already done so, check out this site
