You need to remove the engine and gearbox together.

Have you removed the hidden bolt (seen when the starter motor is off)

Also the tin plates on the bellhousing can snag and cause difficulty.

Sounds like you are changing an early to late (or vise versa) engine, all can be swapped over, but it’s a little more work as the coil packs and oil cooler are different.
