I've been doing a lot of research on this Paul.
The important thing is that the monopod/head can take the weight of your outfit. Most cheap monopods are not up to the job (especially with a long lens on).
The pros recommend Gitzo, but they are expensive.
Most others like Manfrotto who do a range of monopods and heads with different weight ratings.
One thing to consider is the extended height. Best if you can take photos comfortably standing up without stooping.
I am looking at getting the Manfrotto 680B with the 234RC head. Medium price but has several recommendations. A good deal for this combo on ebay at the moment.
