Hi Tim,

Your 1.8T has only a tensioner, no idler pulley, I understand. Whilst the rotating part of the tensioner may well be running smoothly, your alarming photograph suggests that the applied tension is incorrect, allowing the belt to slip off the pulley.

You could try retensioning it by following the MG Rover instructions then, if possible, starting the engine with the covers off and observe what happens. A failing tensioner will move slightly through its range rather than appearing stationary.
Alternatively just renew it.
