Think of it this way Gary, the purpose of the bush in normal service is to give compliance to the front of the trailing arm where it is bolted to the toe adjustment bracket.
So you remove the three fixing points at the back of the arm, in the form of the upper and lower arms, and the damper bolt, leaving you with a large cast iron structure with a fulcrum at it's most forward point........I would say 2 to 3 inches of side to side movement will be fine
I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you, if the bushes look physically okay, they will be fit for further service
