Further to this discussion may I add that its not all down to the rather fragile fixing. In my case the rhs strut seized solid, putting massive pressure on an already weakened spot weld, when I tried to close the tailgate. I would recommend replacing both struts as soon as any sign of fatigue shows around the pivot ball pins.
