It does depend on the insurance company, a customer who thought he would take a short cut across a field managed to damage the engine as a bolder pierced his sump and he carried on.
The reason for the shortcut was a traffic jam and the field had open gates both on the road he was on and a clear road at the other side of the field. You could understand it if he was in a 4X4 but he was driving a Focus ST. The insurance company paid for the recovery, a new engine and the claim the farmer put in for contamination of his field.
