Hmmmm why? Are mountain bikes offensive to people from Yorkshire?

What's wrong with this? I let me 8 year old sit on my lap and steer round our field and my 11 year old has driven round it albeit with me in the passenger seat hovering over the gear stick and handbrake! I first drove a car across fields when I was 10 and that was without parents around!
Maybe it's just a country thing but we get use to handling machinery from a fairly young age and whilst I wouldn't let my children drive a car without me in the passenger seat I'm very keen that they learn the basics of car control well before they hit a public road at 17. Fact of the matter is that I could already handle a car fairly well before I started my driving lessons which meant that I could focus on the rules of the road without having to worry about how to make the thing go forwards and I then went on to pass my test first time with just 7 hours of lessons.
On the whole with appropriate supervision driving around a field in a car is pretty safe, there isn't anything to hit!
