Yeah, I was offered a 4.2 FHC on a 'M' plate (1973) in 1978 (ish) for £1,850. However, at that point in time I did not believe I would be able to fill the fuel tanks so declined the offer

Your "previous owned" 59 year old jag may not be anywhere near original now. Even new tubs are available never mind brake and suspension upgrades. When a car is going for big money it obviously allows a renovator more leeway to make a good job of it!
