All fixed, thanks Ron for the tip.

The holes need to be toward the edge of the tabs on the surround so the screws miss the back of the 'cup' other than that an easy fix really.
Oh and to get the re-assembled unit back in place behind the door card I needed a gentle (

) thump with the heal of my hand.

Managed to do it in situ, but I did drill the holes in the surround as a guide.
