Ok, thanks everyone for the advice.

I think I'll give Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel a try, mainly because it's fast and I need to get this scuttle back on the car quickly. The whole drain tube/closing panel/scuttle episode is holding up much bigger jobs.

Question for MacRob & bl52krz: do you use a foam applicator or a cloth to apply the Autoglym?

Another question: the windscreen edge of the scuttle has a long rubber seal which is held in place by a strip of 6mm x 1mm (ish) double-sided foam tape. The tape on mine doesn't stay stuck any more - has anyone got a link to a suitable replacement?
