Good idea.
What we had before was purchase tax - still unwelcome but at least it had the reasonable notion that its variable rate was higher the more luxurious the item was and was charged only on its sales price.
VAT in contrast applies to every part of the production process. Invented by a Frenchman Maurice Laurie in 1954.
You can see the attraction - even a product given away for free still generates tax revenue at every step of its production.
VAT could only be attractive to those who despise success and prosperity.
Nuff said.
