I have no idea really. We have several silver birch next to it and it wasn't silver birch, or willow. It has a course, rough bark is about as much as I know. It had spread sideways blocking access to the extreme rear of the garden, so I cut a limb off and trimmed it back a couple of decades ago. My trimming seems to have caused rot at the base which weakened it and down it came.
I suppose I could take a photo of a leaf and try to ID from that..
