Since no one seemed to have answered the original poster's question, here is the answer to it: the idea behind operating the glove box by a button (located higher up and closer to the driver) was

a) to allow easier access for the driver to open the glove box without having to lean over as much and

b) - even more importantly - the easy inclusion of the glove box into the "valet setting", where the special valet key does not allow to open the glove box. This is ensured without the driver having to think about it when dropping off the car at a dealer or indeed a valet, and it also prevents the driver from finding his glove box locked on the go because he or she had forgotten to unlock it.
