Default Buying/selling a 75/ZT?

I read today that a member had to scrap his car because of little interest in a sale posted on this site. While this is sad, it is obviously a reality, it happened to me. We can't get what we're expecting.
This makes me think that, providing you have the knowledge, a private buy could be the way to go. I bought my present car for 1200 quid, previous owner wasn't a member, so the car was std. A Firefrost diesel conn 04, 64k miles, new clutch etc. I also observe that many of the Mk1's now are suffering from the dreaded 'tin worm' not so much the bodywork (because many are cherished) but the sills, suspension arms etc. Brian touched on this recently, (no, let's not go back there) it's the underneath that's important along with the mechanical condition.

At the end of the day, when looking for a car, we want a cheap purchase with minimum outlay thereafter, holy grail.
