Think about how frequently you use the car and the length of your journeys. For example, moving the car on and off the drive or very short trips to the shops doesn't give the alternator enough time to replenish the charge taken by the starter motor.
Car batteries last a long time if they're kept fully charged. The reality is that few are. You may need to invest in a smart maintenance charger which can be left connected.
