Took my Rover 75 2.0 Diesel in for it's MOT last Thursday, it failed on emissions with an average reading of 3.67 1/m, absolutely no idea what this relates to but the test applied was "Turbo (LIMIT: 3.00 1/m).
I asked the chap at the test centre what did this mean, I understand NOx, Particulates, Hydrocarbons etc. but how did this equate to these test readings, were particulates too high, NOx etc. without knowing that it's difficult to work out a solution. Anyway, I had a few ideas, fill up with Shell V Power Diesel as it contains GTL - Gas to Liquid fuel which is a lot cleaner than regular diesel and topping this up with a fuel additive would help, but would it be enough!
There was however something else I could do, last year when looking at emissions reductions technologies for my business I came across a device that you simply suspend in your tank that claimed to reduce emissions, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption, so I bought a few samples with a view to conducting a few tests on generators, trucks etc., never got round to fitting one in my Rover! Well on Thursday afternoon I did and took the car for a retest yesterday afternoon, results were significant, the test applied this time was Plate Value (LIMIT: 1.00 1/m) No idea why the different test, but the result was 0.97 1/m compared to 3.67 on Thursday consequently it passed it's MOT.
There must be a lot of people out there confused by these new tests especially when your car fails and the MOT Test centre tells you to take your car to a DPF specialist to have it checked out and repaired and nothing else, you know it's not going to be cheap.
