Depending on the fueling set-up there will be a vent hose going to the gas tank and maybe a pulse line (hose) as well. The vent hose may have a screw type plug in it in the tank. If somebody screwed this plug into the hose they will likely have cut threads into the hose and thus stopping it from venting. It is supposed to vent by bypassing past/through the screw threads. The pulse line is meant to transfer pulses through it from the engine to the carb diaphragm to allow it to "pump" fuel into the engine. If this line gets cracked and leaks air it can't pulse and the engine will die as if out of fuel. After 4 or 5 years you may as well just replace these hoses - cheap to do and you may be surprised at how hard the originals have become.
Run it until it dies, then open the gas cap. If you hear a hiss and/or it starts after replacing the gas cap, it is a vent problem.
Coils do fail. When they start to fail they will run the engine fine until they get hot, then not make enough spark. After cooling they will work for another little while. Checking spark on a cold coil is a waste of time.
Good luck,
Glenn
